Recent disappointments have led to excessive pessimism about Latin America’s economic and democratic prospects. International recognition of the region’s diversity and a sense of perspective about its setbacks will improve its chances for further success.

About the Author

Abraham F. Lowenthal is the founding president of the Pacific Council on International Policy, an independent, nonpartisan international leadership forum. A professor of international relations at the University of Southern California and a vice president of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, he was also the founding director of the Inter-American Dialogue, and before that, of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.
