About the Author

Krzysztof Stanowski, an activist in Poland’s underground Solidarity movement and the leader of an independent scouting movement during the 1980s, was program director of the Warsaw-based Foundation for Education for Democracy (FED) until 1997. A historian by training, he currently serves as coordinator of the FED’s international programs in Eastern Europe and the New Independent States (NIS). He is the author of several handbooks for nongovernmental organization activists. This essay was translated from Polish by Magdalena Potocka.
