About the Author

Sung-Joo Han is professor of political science at Korea University, where he has also served as director of the Asiatic Research Center. He has written extensively about South Korean politics, development, and foreign relations. Among his English-language publications are The Failure of Democracy in South Korea and several edited works, including The U.S.–South Korean Alliance (with Gerald Curtis) and Foreign Policy of the Republic of Korea (with Youngnok Koo). Professor Han is also a columnist for Newsweek International and a director of the Korean Political Science Association, and has been a visiting professor at Columbia University.
