José Antonio Lucero, a doctoral candidate in the department of politics at Princeton University, is currently completing a dissertation on political representation and indigenous movements in Ecuador and Bolivia. He has been a visiting researcher at both the Centro de Investigación de los Movimientos Sociales del Ecuador (CEDIME) in Quito and the Centro de Investigación y Promoción del Campesinado (CIPCA) in La Paz.

Massive protest by indigenous groups in both 2000 and 2001 have overthrown one president and weakened another. Though such conflict poses a short-term threat, it may ultimately contribute to democratic development.
