Two top experts on political violence, Rachel Kleinfeld and Nicole Bibbins Sedaca, have studied how communities around the world have succeeded in reversing this trend. In a special release of their new essay in the October issue of the Journal of Democracy, Kleinfeld and Sedaca argue that political leaders, more than anyone, have the power to stoke or stamp out this dangerous cycle of violence.
