John R. Bowen is professor of anthropology and chair of the Program in Social Thought and Analysis at Washington University in St. Louis. His most recent books are Muslims Through Discourse: Religion and Ritual in Gayo Society (1993). He is now completing a study of changes in religious and civil law in Indonesia.
