Pablo Antonio Cuadra

Pablo Antonio Cuadra is Nicaragua’s most renowned intellectual and man of letters. An influential innovator in Spanish-language poetry, he has been editor of La Prensa‘s literary supplement (and coeditor of the newspaper) since 1952. His literary magazine, El Pez y la Serpiente (The Fish and the Serpent), first published many of Nicaragua’s foremost poets and writers, including several prominent Sandinistas. A foe of the Somozas, who imprisoned him twice, he eventually became a vocal critic of the Sandinistas as well, especially on the issue of censorship.
